Our Commitment to Marine Conservation

"As one of the largest suppliers of fish products to the school meals industry, we felt it our responsibility to support the growing number of meal providers looking to source sustainable produce for their menus."

Adam Starkey
CEO, Green Gourmet Ltd

Green Gourmet is strengthening its commitment to marine conservation by producing 13 of its most popular fish products,  sourced only from fisheries certified as sustainable and well-managed to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard.

Following a chain of custody audit by an independent third party certification body, the MSC has authorised the use of its logo on Green Gourmet literature and packaging. This will be a valuable selling point for menu planners introducing menu changes for summer term.

About the MSC

The MSC is an independent non-profit organisation whose role is to recognise well-managed fisheries around the world and to encourage people to buy seafood products which carry its approval.

Almost a quarter of fish stocks worldwide are depleted or in danger of depletion, while more than half are being fished at their biological limit. Seven of the top 10 sea fish species are either fully exploited or over-exploited.  Against this alarming background, the MSC has developed an environmental standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries, and uses a product label to reward environmentally-responsible fishery management.

Since it was founded in 1997 by Unilever, the world's largest buyer of seafood, and WWF, the international conservation organisation, the MSC has succeeded in bringing together supporters from more than 100 organisations in over 20 countries.
The MSC has a keen interest in encouraging children to appreciate the importance of sustainable seafood - its ‘Fish & Kids’ project is designed to bring sustainable sourcing to schools and restaurants. The project gives youngsters a chance to learn about marine environmental issues and sustainable fishing, with fun activities in the classroom and on the website.
